For Sale Ariel Square Four 1000cc Stock Number: 791 Frame Number: KR 249 Engine Number: NML 780 Mileage: 11,482 Description: This motorcycle will be registered for the road with an age related number plate and road tax. In 1928 a young freelance designer named Edward Turner had drawings of a radical design for a new engine which he was showing to various motorcycle manufacturers. The new 1000cc engine design had four vertical cylinders arranged in a square, it was essentially a pair of overhead cam parallel twins joined by their geared central flywheels so that the two cranks rotated in opposite directions. With the gears correctly meshed, the two diagonally opposite pistons were at top dead centre, the counter-rotating crankshafts combined with the crankpin arrangement resulted in minimal vibration in a very compact unit.
