In 1953 Royal Enfield returned to the 250cc class with a new model – the Clipper. Featuring a cast-iron engine top end, oil tank integral with the alloy crankcase, and a separate gearbox, the ensemble was housed in scaled down version of the swinging-arm frame that had debuted on the Bullet in 1958.Alternator electrics and coil ignition were new departures, however. A 350cc Clipper was added to the range in November 1955, deploying the Model G engine in the swinging-arm frame to create a cheaper alternative to the Bullet. Both Clippers were dropped from the range during 1957though the name was revived the following year for a ‘budget’ version of the new unit-construction Crusader 250 – the Clipper II.
