1959 Matchless G80CS good runner for restoration / recommission. With V5C

1959 MATCHLESS G80CS 500CC Here is a rare opportunity indeed to own & restore one of the best all round classic bikes of the era. The Matchless G80CS was built as a Competition Scrambler but nevertheless with a few refinements can make a superb all-rounder road-bike. This example is in running order but clearly needs thorough recommissioning or total restoration. It starts OK & sounds great. The engine sound good mechanically and revs very nicely, doesn’t burn oil, starts easily (good spark from Competition N1C magneto) Gearbox selects gears OK The clutch cable is broken so I haven’t attempted to ride the bike. It comes with V5C doc, registration number 124 UYG. Frame number is C8748, engine number is 59/G80CS 3352 . The bike is registered for historic (free) road tax and is of course pre-1960 MOT exempt. Cosmetically the bike is generally poor all over. There are no real nightmares, the frame is good , wheel rims & spokes useable but not pretty! The tank is petrol-tight but needs a good paint-job. The engine has some fin damage on the drive side of the barrel. This is the last of the all welded single downtube type competition frame. it is quite a bit lighter than the later duplex version. It would not be difficult to fit a dynamo & lighting kit to this bike to make more practical for road use. There is the standard provision for dynamo fitting into the back of the primary cases, through the engine plates. (drive is from a dual toothed engine sprocket). All in all this is a ...
